The Other Art Walk

By Sebastian del Marmol

Wynwood and the Design District might be Miami’s art meccas du jour. But do they have staying power? Only time will tell. Coral Gables, on the other hand, has proven art cred; Gallery Night existed for decades before the Second Saturday Art Walk. And now, the City Beautiful is primed to reclaim its spot as the cultural melting pot of Miami-Dade by bringing other assets to the fray — besides free wine. This Friday’s Gallery Night will include two events taking place simultaneously: the Art in the Park Concert Series and Giralda Under the Stars. Art in the Park will bring live entertainment, food, and more art to Ponce Circle Park (2810 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables) — an easy stop on the gallery tour. Bands Ketchy Shuby, Xperimento, and ¡Suenalo! will perform. And if you’re not satiated by typical street fare, walk over to the 100 block of Giralda Avenue where the street will be closed to traffic, and dozens of restaurants and bars will offer their eats to hungry patrons. If you happen to remember that the night is ultimately about art appreciation, check out “Art by Architects” at JSK Architectural Group (137 Giralda Ave., Coral Gables) or “Contemporary Chinese Painting, Prints, Photos, and Sculpture” at Artspace/Virginia Miller Galleries. The entertainment and art-soaking are free, but you’ll have to pay for your food. Gallery Night gets going at 7 p.m. Trolley service will be available for transport to various downtown galleries and special events.
